Hypercholesterolemia increases a persons risk of de-veloping atherosclerotic artery disease, which can cause heart attacks and strokes; specifically, a 10% increase in the level of blood cholesterol leads to >15% increase in the risk of developing coronary heart disease. The majority of blood cholesterol is contained in particles called low-density lipoproteins (LDL), and treatments for hypercholesterolemia are directed at reducing this LDL-cholesterol. For most people, a desirable level of total blood cholesterol is <200 mg/dL. More than half of American adults have blood cholesterol levels >200 mg/dL, and 20% have levels >240 mg/dL. . .
