Each year, 2.4 million Americans have AF this includes 5% of people >69 years old and 10% of those >80 years old. Men develop AF more often than women. A person with AF has 4 5 times the normal risk of developing a stroke, and 15% of all strokes in the US are caused by AF. In AF, muscle in the heart s atrial chambers contracts irregularly and ineffectively. The underlying disorganized electrical depolarizations also cause the heart s ventricles to beat quickly and irregularly. Besides causing an increased risk of stroke, these problems lead to less effective pumping of blood. AF and its consequences can usually be controlled by medications . . .
