Alzheimers disease is an incurable
metabolic malfunction that destroys the parts of the brain responsible for
cognition. Alzheimers patients gradually lose their memories, their
comprehension, and the ability to care for themselves. Alzheimers disease
is the most common cause of dementia in Western countries. It is mainly a
disease of the elderly. In the US, Alzheimers disease can be found in
one-tenth of people older than 65 years, almost half of those over 85 years,
and two-thirds of elderly nursing-home patients. In total, there are 4.5
million Americans with Alzheimers disease. . . |
